Sleep Trackers for Men Over 40: What to Know

A 2025 meta-analysis compared consumer wrist-worn sleep trackers with polysomnography. It reported that these devices differ significantly from polysomnography on measures such as total sleep time, sleep efficiency, sleep latency and time awake after sleep onset. Use trackers for trends only. Snoring, daytime exhaustion or witnessed pauses in breathing should be discussed with a clinician, who can order a sleep test.

Wearables

Rings, watches and straps estimate sleep from movement and heart-rate signals; estimates can differ from clinical sleep studies.

Under-mattress sensors

One published study compared an under-mattress sensor with polysomnography for detecting moderate-to-severe sleep apnea; it is not a substitute for clinical diagnosis.

Sleep-environment products

Products that adjust bed temperature, light or noise were not rated because we have not reviewed enough published trials.

FAQ

Do consumer trackers diagnose sleep apnea?

No. Only a clinician-directed sleep evaluation can diagnose it.
