Direct-to-Consumer Lab Testing: Membership vs Pay-Per-Test Compared

Companies describe two broad models: memberships that bundle a panel, a dashboard and clinician review, and pay-per-test services that sell specific tests. This page lists what each company says on its own public pages, checked on October 16, 2026. It is not a ranking or recommendation, and we have not tested or audited any company. Everything in the table is 'according to the company'; features, prices and availability change often, so confirm on the company's site. Rules for consumer-ordered tests vary by state, and some tests or services are unavailable in some states (New York, New Jersey and Rhode Island are commonly restricted).

According to each company's own public pages, checked on October 16, 2026. Not a ranking. Prices are "as listed" and exclude any lab, draw or add-on fees unless stated. Confirm everything on the company's site.

Rules for consumer-ordered lab tests vary by state, and some tests or services are unavailable in some states (New York, New Jersey and Rhode Island are often restricted). Results are general information, not medical advice; discuss them with a licensed clinician. Some companies also offer clinician consultations, supplements or other services; this page covers only their testing. Sponsored placement, if any, is labeled and does not change this information or any evidence rating.

How to read the table

Biomarker counts are not directly comparable: companies count tests, markers and biomarkers differently, and some counts refer to a single panel rather than a whole service. 'Care team' describes access to clinicians as the company describes it; it is not an assessment of quality. Prices are shown as the company lists them on the checked date and may not include lab, draw or add-on fees.

Who orders the test

In the US, lab tests are generally ordered by a licensed provider. Consumer services typically arrange this through an affiliated or independent provider, so you may not need to visit your own doctor. What is required, and whether a given test is available in your state, depends on state law and on the company. Check the company's current terms for your state before buying.

What research says

Cardiovascular prevention guidelines recommend specific tests, such as lipid panels, as part of risk assessment. A Cochrane review of general health checks found they are unlikely to reduce illness or death. Individual tests can still be clinically useful, and results are best discussed with your clinician. See the sources below.

FAQ

Do I need a doctor's order?

Rules vary by state and company. Several companies say they arrange the order through an independent or affiliated provider, so you may not need to visit your own doctor. Check each company's terms.

Are these services available in every state?

No. Some companies say they cannot offer some or all tests in certain states, with New York, New Jersey and Rhode Island frequently named. See the availability column and the company's site.

Are broad panels worth it?

Research on general health checks has not shown benefit for reducing illness or death, and broad panels can return borderline results that lead to follow-up testing. Discuss with a clinician.

Is this medical advice?

No. This page is general information. Talk to a licensed clinician before acting on any test result.
