About this evidence rating

A systematic review and meta-analysis in athletes found bioimpedance overestimated fat-free mass compared with DXA, with high correlations but wide limits of agreement. A 2026 systematic review in healthy adults found bioimpedance estimates of body fat and fat-free mass were generally not equivalent to a four-compartment reference at the individual level. Results vary by device, hydration and protocol. The rating applies to the category of device, not to any brand.

This is an editorial opinion based on publicly available research, not medical advice or a regulatory determination. How ratings work. Last reviewed October 16, 2026.

Things to consider

  • Bioimpedance and DXA are not interchangeable; use the same device and conditions (time of day, hydration, food, recent exercise) when tracking changes.
  • Manufacturers say these devices are not recommended for people with pacemakers or some implanted devices; check the manufacturer's instructions.
  • Body-composition numbers are estimates, not a diagnosis. Measurement accuracy varies.
  • Discuss results and any next steps with a licensed clinician.
