About this evidence rating

Published validation studies compare individual systems with laboratory carts or reference methods. One study found a portable analyzer agreed strongly with a stationary cart during cycling; another found a different portable analyzer acceptable in cycling; a third found a portable system overestimated VO2 at moderate and vigorous intensities versus a Douglas-bag reference. Validity depends on the specific device, protocol and intensity. The rating applies to the category, not to any brand.

This is an editorial opinion based on publicly available research, not medical advice or a regulatory determination. How ratings work. Last reviewed October 16, 2026.

Things to consider

  • Results from different analyzers may not be interchangeable; use the same device for repeat tests.
  • Maximal exercise testing may require medical screening first; ask a clinician if you have heart, lung or other health conditions.
  • Outputs such as training zones or biological age are estimates, not diagnoses.
  • Discuss results and any next steps with a licensed clinician.
